A One-Size-Fits-All Approach to Health Insurance Isn't an Approach at All-It's a Mistake

Health Insurance for Individuals and Families

Looking for a health care plan through the Affordable Care Act Marketplace? Simplified Benefits is here to help. We assist individuals and families in finding affordable and dependable coverage tailored to their needs. Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, many families can now access plans with even lower monthly premiums.

What Are ACA Plans?

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly known as the ACA or "Obamacare," was enacted in 2010 during President Obama's administration. Its primary aim was to enhance the accessibility, affordability, and quality of health insurance nationwide.

Before the ACA, many Americans faced challenges in obtaining or affording health insurance due to pre-existing conditions. The ACA significantly decreased the number of uninsured individuals in the U.S.

ACA plans are available through the Marketplace or Exchange, allowing individuals and families to choose these plans instead of employer-sponsored or private insurance. Pre-existing conditions do not disqualify you from enrolling, and many people benefit from tax credits and subsidies to lower their premiums.

Every ACA plan must include the ten Essential Health Benefits (EHBs). These ten benefits include:

  • Hospitalization

  • Emergency services

  • Ambulatory services

  • Prescription drugs

  • Maternity and newborn care

  • Mental health and substance abuse services

  • Lab tests

  • Chronic disease management, preventive, and “well” services

  • Pediatric dental and vision care

  • Rehabilitative services

How Much Do ACA Plans Cost?

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) did more than introduce new health insurance options; it also included key provisions that expanded Medicaid eligibility, banned discrimination based on pre-existing conditions, and provided premium subsidies for individuals and families with limited incomes.

Premium tax credits can lower the cost of insurance plans purchased through the ACA. Eligibility for these credits depends on your household income, which you'll report during the application process. This will determine whether you qualify for subsidies.

In addition to premiums, you'll have deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments based on your chosen plan. Plans are divided into metal tiers—Platinum offers the most coverage, followed by Gold, Silver, and Bronze.

When Can I Enroll?

The Affordable Care Act has an annual open enrollment period that begins November 1 and ends January 15 in most states. Some states enjoy longer enrollment periods. If you enroll in Obamacare by December 15, your coverage will begin on January 1. If you enroll after December 15, coverage begins on February 1.

However, many people qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. If you’ve had a sudden life change, you can enroll in an ACA plan at any time of the year. Some qualifying life events include a change in employment, marriage, divorce, moving to a new city, and having a child.
